Quick decisions with no real research is usually my go to. More out of fear of making the wrong decision, not beautiful spontaneity. One of my favorite drinking partners, whom I bonded with over our semi-toxic work environment, and I headed to The Hidden Pearl after work. It popped up first in a google search of ‘cocktails‘ and ‘Brooklyn’. Arguably a google search that can render results in the thousands, so we took it as a sign. Entering the “hidden door” behind an unassuming front restaurant, we were happy to see we were the first patrons of the night. Which gave us the best seats at the small bar.
Immediately upon sitting down, the charming and adorable bartender with the beautiful arm tattoos began to take us on a mini tour of trendy Brooklyn. In describing the first cocktail we pointed to on the menu he noted, "You see it’s a rare Japanese peach which we dehydrate for just 8 hours and pair with an organic dried cherry to bring it together".
Each cocktail (there were several) was a different flavor of Japan. The music, of course, was on vinyl on a nearby turntable, chosen by Luke, our aforementioned bartender. The chairs were wrapped in a soft leather you could spin on for hours, the food was mostly fried but predictable and therefore comforting. We drank and I flirted my best with Luke while table after table paid their check. We ended the night with an on the house watermelon and rum shot, cementing my lust for Luke and my love for a pearl now very much found.
